History – Toys

This term we have been learning all about the history of toys.  We have talked about and drawn our favourite toys.  We have looked at toys throughout history and how they have changed across the decades.  We learned about the impact of WW2 on the production of toys and how fisher price were the first company to make its entire product range in plastic.

We then went on to learn about decades and concentrated on toys from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.  We set up our classroom as a toy museum - each of the 5 tables where set up with toys from the 5 decades – 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.  Children worked in groups and went around the different tables and looked at and played with the different toys from the decades.  After the children had all had a turn playing with the toys, we came together as a class to order the tables according to the decades – beginning with the 50s and moving up to the 90s.  We then made a class timeline on the floor with the decades and the children had to select toys from the table to place in next to the appropriate period of time.

Our session this week was to sort toys into old and new.  The children would have a selection of toys and were going to work in groups to sort them into the correct piles of old and new.  They were then going to complete a Venn diagram – copying the correct vocabulary into the old/new/both.
