First of all, well done if you wrote your own story last week! I'd love to read it when we're back in school! This week, I'm going to leave you lots of grammar activities to keep you busy so that you can build up your knowledge before we return to school on the 1st June.

Monday- adverbs

Adverbs are words that describe a verb. A helpful hint is that they usually (not don't always) end in -ly.

e.g. We ran quickly.

She skipped happily.

He slowly unpacked his bag.

Tuesday- adding ing

Verbs are 'action words' or 'doing words'

e.g. run, hop, talk, sleep

Today we are going to be adding the suffix ing to verbs to put them in the present tense.

For many verbs when talking in the present tense, you simply add -ing

e.g. jump becomes jumping

...but...

In some words, we must remember to double the consonant before adding -ing (hop -> hopping)

In some words, the word must change completely (run-> ran)

In words ending in an e, remove the e before adding ing (come-> coming)

Why not challenge your adult to a spelling test if you're feeling confident?

Wednesday- adding ed

Verbs are 'action words' or 'doing words'

e.g. run, hop, talk, sleep

Today, we will be adding ed to these verbs to put them in the past tense. For many verbs, you simply add -ed

e.g. jump becomes jumped

...but...

In some words, we must remember to double the consonant before adding -ed (hop -> hopped)

In some words, we must swap the y for an i before adding -ed (worry -> worried)

In some words, the word must change completely (run-> ran)

In words already ending in an e, remove the e before adding ed (notice-> noticed)

Why not challenge your adult to a spelling test if you're feeling confident?

Thursday- adding other common suffixes

If you can add ed and ing, you can follow the same rules to add -er. Why not have a quick go now with an adult?

Today, we are going to have a look at using other suffixes such as -est, -ness to spell longer words. Use the powerpoint and game to help you. If you find it easy, why not put each suffix word into a sentence of your own?

Friday- plurals

Today we are going to be looking at adding s or es to make a word singular or plural.

e.g 1 fox (singular) 2 foxes (plural)

1 shop (singular) 2 shops (plural)

Use the presentation and activities to help you.
