Curriculum

At St. William of York, Religious Education lies at the heart of our curriculum, reflecting our commitment to the Catholic faith and the development of every child as a unique individual in the image of God. Our RE curriculum nurtures children’s understanding of themselves, others, and the world, fostering their relationship with God, promoting knowledge of Catholic faith and life, and encouraging respect, reflection, and spirituality.

From Nursery to Year Four, we follow the To Know You More Clearly RE Directory and in Year 5 and 6, we follow the Come & See programme, dedicating 10% of the school timetable to RE. Both programmes provide rich, developmental opportunities for children to grow in faith, character, and understanding, linking learning to prayer, Scripture, and real-life experiences. Lessons are delivered through varied approaches, including whole-class teaching, group work, individual tasks, creative activities, and visits, encouraging collaboration and independent reflection.

Our curriculum emphasises the lived expression of faith, helping children recognise God’s presence in their lives, understand the teachings of Jesus, and apply these values in practical ways. Assessment is ongoing, both through teacher-led evaluation and moderation within the school and local RE networks, ensuring children make meaningful progress and deepen their religious literacy.

The impact of our RE curriculum is seen in children who can discuss their faith confidently, appreciate their God-given talents, and live out Gospel values actively, contributing positively to school, community, and the wider Church.

Come and See

Autumn: Children explore God as Creator, their identity as loved and valued individuals, and how relationships are formed within families and communities. They are introduced to key stories from Scripture and begin to understand belonging within God’s family and the Church.

Spring: Pupils learn about Jesus as God with us, exploring his life, teachings, and relationships. Through Scripture and prayer, children consider how Jesus shows love, forgiveness, and service, and how these values shape daily life.

Summer: Children reflect on Jesus’ death and resurrection, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the Church’s mission. They explore reconciliation, hope, and how Christians are called to live out faith through service, justice, and love in the wider world.

To Know You More Clearly

Spring: Pupils learn about God made flesh. Community/Local Church explores the people of God united in faith. Relating/Eucharist focuses on living in communion with Jesus and others. Giving/Lent & Easter reflects on Jesus’ self-giving, resurrection, and following his example of love.
