Prayer and Liturgy
At St. William of York, prayer and liturgy are central to the life and mission of the school. Rooted in the Catholic tradition, they enable the whole school community to become reflective, experience the presence of God, and grow in spiritual maturity. Prayer and liturgy support children in developing a sense of belonging, exploring personal belief, reflecting on moral and spiritual questions, and responding to life with wonder, gratitude, and faith.
In line with statutory requirements, all pupils participate in daily prayer and liturgy that reflects the rites, practices, and liturgical norms of the Catholic Church. While distinct from Religious Education curriculum time, prayer and liturgy fulfil pupils’ entitlement to experience the Church’s rich liturgical life, including shared prayers, Scripture, music, and sacramental celebrations. Prayer is structured using a Gather, Listen, Respond and Go Forth format, appropriate to age and stage of development.
Governors ensure prayer and liturgy remain central to the Catholic life of the school. The headteacher provides spiritual leadership, supported by the Prayer and Liturgy Coordinator, who oversees planning, provision, training, monitoring, and pupil participation. An annual plan reflects the liturgical year and key celebrations, with regular opportunities for Mass and the Sacraments.
Prayer and liturgy take place daily through whole-school, key stage, and class-based celebrations. Children are actively involved in planning and leading worship, supported by Worship Leaders from Year One to Six. Through high-quality prayer experiences, pupils are formed to live out Gospel values with confidence, reverence, and joy.
